Sugar Makery
Come on now, homemade ice cream, old-fashioned soda, candy of all kinds (new & old), baked goods, chocolate and I don’t even know what else. I’m sure I’ve left something out, but there is so much at Sugar Makery in Glenwood located at 204 E Sharp St, Glenwood, IA 51534 and their sister store, Sugar Makery Bittersweet in Council Bluffs located at 19278 Conifer LN Council Bluffs, IA 51534.
People have asked if I ever go over to Council Bluffs or tell me that I should go over to Council Bluffs, because they have good restaurants. Let me first say, I am not a food location snob. If food is good, I will travel. The thing is, there are so many places in Omaha that I haven’t even gotten to yet. If you love a place, please feel free to tell me about it. I don’t know about a ton of places outside of my normal travel radius unless there is a good social media presence or word of mouth gets to me. So, to all my Council Bluffers (is that what you call yourselves?), this buds for you!
Now, I’ve been to the Glenwood location on multiple occasions, and they have quite the offering as mentioned above. The ice cream is always nice because they have a variety of flavors that change often. It is a smaller space, so they don’t have as many flavors as their Glenwood location, but they still bring it! They had bomb pop ice cream on one of our recent visits. When it comes to ice cream, I’m happy when we find a place that offers a vegan option that my wife can enjoy. On one of our visits, they had a mango coconut available. Alexis, thank you so much for that!
Aside from the ice cream, they have a nice selection of old-fashioned bottled soda to choose from. So many classic flavors. Cream Soda, Root Beer, Citrus Soda, etc. Same with the candy. You want the latest trending candy popular with kids? They probably have it. Old fashioned candy that you scoop and is charged by the pound? Got that too. Taffy, rock candy, gum, suckers and it goes on and on. You want a peanut butter/chocolate Buckeye Ball? What about fudge? Check and check!
The Glenwood location is cool, but the Council Bluffs location is on a different level. Mainly due to the size difference. This place is a really good size which allows them to offer more of a selection, if you can believe that. Not only do they have all the other mentioned items, but they have more selections of ice cream and often more than one vegan option. So much more sweetness to go around.
I love you like a fat kid loves cake! In my case, a fattie adult. On our visit, they had a spread of cakes that was so lovely! I remember there being a cheesecake that caught my eye. I had to talk myself out of buying it because we had already had our ice cream, soda and candy. Next time though; it’s all mine if they have it. One of the big attractions at this location is that they provide custom cake services. That is a hot commodity right now and there are so many creative options. Just look at their site to see a few of them. Sugar Makery Custom Cakes
Even better than everything that I have mentioned above is the story of Alexis and husband Malcolm. I got to have an extended conversation with them earlier this year. They most certainly have my support! They share a story that may be familiar to other people. From being fed up with corporate B.S. to stepping out on faith and starting something of their own. I already loved the shop, but after getting to know the family, I’m invested in their success. They are the types of people that I want others to see win. A lot of us get stuck in the responsibility side of life and forget that we only get one short span of time on this earth. Though leaving the security of a full-time job may be scary, the payoff/reward of doing something that you love is tenfold.
Before I close this out, there is one thing that I wanted to make sure to point out. The cost aspect of visiting their shops. Sometimes, it can be expensive when you visit a specialty shop like Sugar Makery, however, I feel like their costs are fair. In my experience, the locally made ice cream will only run between $3.25 and $4.75, depending on what you order. On one past visit we ordered ice cream for 4 people in which there were 2 double scoop orders, 2 waffle cones, 1 cake cone and 1 dish for a total just under $18 before tax. Yes, it is affordable.
Do yourself a favor and stop out at one of these sweet locations. If you don’t, that just leaves more for me. In all seriousness, I feel like this is a place to go if you ever have a sweet tooth. Once again, we are fortunate to have a plethora of local places that do a great job of providing great service and great products!
I give Sugar Makery 5 Fatties. Have you been? If so, what do you think?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my thoughts on food. You are amazing!
