Fried Chicken! Yes, Holy Ghost Church is known for the Gospel, but it is also known for the Fried Chicken Dinner Nights organized by the Men’s Club every fall. They usually run the 3rd Friday August through October and then again in January. Now, I am not a church-goer myself, but I am a food-goer! Tell me where the food is and if it’s good I’m likely to go. Haha. My wife and kids are members of the church and that’s how I know about it. They enjoy going and volunteering at each of the events. I have been enjoying the fried chicken for years!
Though I am not a church member, my wife is a believer and active participant and I do try to support her with some of the things that she does there. Spending money for good food is one of the easiest ways for me to do that. It is right up my alley for sure. I don’t think I’ve volunteered for the Chicken Dinner Nights before, but I have at some of the Fish Frys. These chicken dinner nights are not as busy, but they have been increasing in popularity and attendance. That is a testament of the Golden Brown Goodness that they are serving up.
This chicken is SUPER LEGIT! I cannot express to you how good this fried chicken is. I can’t help but think of the Dave Chapelle skit when I talk about this and smile. I don’t know if I’m genetically pre-disposed to liking it, but whatever the reason, it is…excellent! I cannot find anything negative to say about the chicken itself. It is always crispy, juicy and of course it is fresh. The seasoning is on point and my personal preference is to add hot sauce because, “I put that ish on everything!” You can see the volunteers working hard behind the counter to keep up with the demand. I haven’t seen there be a long wait to grab a plate; there is however a consistent flow of traffic for the whole evening. As I mentioned earlier, the popularity is growing and with this they are breaking records for how many meals are being sold.
Yep, meals! It’s a whole dinner. It would be hard to find a better value than the dinner at Holy Ghost Church. For only $10 you can get a 4 piece plate with mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, roll and soda/pop. The drink can even be refilled. I am a fan of almost everything on the plate and I would recommend giving it a try. The mashed potatoes are always fluffy and creamy and it is perfect for dipping the roll into. My only negative mark would be on the vegetable; the green beans specifically. They are usually lacking flavor that would round out the meal. I feel like there could be onion, protein (bacon, turkey neck, ham hock, etc.), and salt/pepper added. Along with that maybe stewing them a bit longer. That is nowhere near a big enough gripe to keep me away from the Chicken Dinner Night. Nor should it be big enough to deter you from going.
Additionally, there are a couple of other things that may attract you to these nights. Desserts and a Meat Wheel. What is a Meat Wheel you ask? Well, I’m so glad that you asked. You see, they hold a $1 dollar raffle for random meat products like steak, bacon, ham, etc. and spin the wheel to pick the winners. Church or no church a spinning meat wheel sounds like heaven! It is important to note that these aren’t just any old ordinary meats either, they are from Stoysich Meats located across the street from the church. So many reasons make it to one of these nights.
God’s house wears many hats and the overall theme is community. Whether it be to worship, be a part of the community or eat fried chicken, head on over to Holy Ghost Church to break bread with others. The church is located at 5219 S 53rd Street in Omaha.
I give the Holy Ghost Fried Chicken Dinner Nights 5 Fatties! Have you been? If so, what do you think?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my thoughts on food. You are amazing!
