Karray’s Cafe
Karray’s Café, I’m glad that we found you! The funny thing is, I was actually planning on going to a different diner in Ralston, but I couldn’t remember the name. I went to Google and searched for “diners near me” and this is one of the places that came up in the search results. Located at 9819 Giles Rd, in La Vista it wasn’t too far of a drive for us. I had driven past this place before, but never knew about it. It was a pleasant find and a nice little spot for a Dad/Daughter breakfast date.
As soon as we walked into the place I had a feeling that we made a good choice. The cafe is a decent size, but not huge and there were a lot of occupied tables. When you step through the door you are greeted by a K-9 Police wall that includes photos, flags and plaques. It definitely had the look and feel of a nice community spot. It seemed like a lot of the patrons were regulars. I don’t know if it is a neighborhood favorite or if people travel to experience the food and atmosphere, but this was the place to be on a Saturday morning.
My daughter and I were greeted and seated quickly. After we sat down our waitress came over to check on us and took our drink orders. After that, a friendly women that seemed to be in charge stopped over and spoke with us to make sure that our drink orders had been taken. She was very welcoming and sparked a conversation with my daughter about the kitty cat eared headband that she was wearing. My daughter actually responded which is typically a big thing for her as she is shy when it comes to talking to most people that she isn’t familiar with. I think this women had a vibe that my daughter could recognize as being warm. She made her way over to us a couple of times throughout our meal to check on us even though she wasn’t our waitress.
We went through the menu trying to decide what to eat and as we decided I looked around to get a better feel of the place. I saw a table of 6-8 older gentlemen across from us having a conversation. These guys for sure had to be regulars. They reminded me of my father-in-law and how he goes and meets with friends for breakfast on Saturdays. Back to the menu! I’m fairly indecisive and sometimes it takes me a bit to decide on what I want. Especially, when multiple good sounding food options are at hand. I talked to our waitress a bit about my top 3 considerations and with her help I selected the Bacon and Swiss Scramble. It came with 2 eggs, hash browns and choice of toast or 2 silver dollar pancakes. I’m more of a pancake guy so that is always my choice. My daughter also went with pancakes and 2 slices of bacon.
There wasn’t too long of a wait before our food arrived. Oh boy, I was ready to bang on my food. Now, this breakfast was an exception that I made for my daughter because I fast every day and don’t eat until noon. I was happy to break my routine for a date with her. It had been a while and it’s always nice to take the kids out for 1-on-1 time. They get enough love, but I think they appreciate their solo time with mom/dad.
I see golden hash browns! I don’t usually use Swiss cheese on my eggs so that was different, but sometimes different is good. In this case, it was a score! I mixed it all to make it a real scramble and added a little hot sauce cause, that’s how I do. Most meals are not complete without a few splashes of that red peppery goodness. OOOh-Weee! My taste buds were jamming. I made light work of this breakfast scramble and then turned my focus to the pancakes. My, my, my, these pancakes! So fluffy and soft; they almost melted when a bite would touch my tongue. I don’t know who the chef is, but I do know that they made them cakes with L-O-V-E. I’m getting hungry just thinking about those pancakes and I just ate before I dug into this review. That’s the power of amazing food right there. My daughter also mentioned that she like the pancakes as well.
Service, food, atmosphere and supporting the community makes this place special. I didn’t know any of the history behind Karray’s Café so I pulled up the site (https://karrayscafe.com/#summary) while writing this review to educate myself. It is a couple that owns the place and Karen (Kar) and Raymond (Ray) are their names. Get it? Kar-Ray, Karray’s! I see what they did there. J I assume that the friendly women was Kar. Their goal was to “open a restaurant that was family-friendly with a great environment and delicious food.” I think they succeeded, but I invite you to visit them yourself to come to that conclusion.
Karray’s, thank you for all that you do and for helping us feel welcomed on our visit. I hope to be back soon and maybe we will have the whole family with us. Keep doing great things! I am happy to support a place in our community that supports community.
I give Karry’s Café 5 Fatties! Have you been? If so, what do you think?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my thoughts on food. You are amazing!
